Last week we read about music and indigenous foods. We read books about salmon, forests, and water. On Thursday we sang, played instruments and danced with McKenzie Peterson and cooked first foods with Erin. Students practiced sounding out words to spell them while writing small moment stories from their lives, we had writers' conferences where students asked each other questions about their writing in order to revise their stories to make them more interesting and easier to follow.
In math first graders worked to solve addition equations and story problems with three addends. They grouped addends to make ten and then added on the third addend. First Graders may now complete assignments through Module 3 Lesson 4. Second graders learned how to model two-digit digit addition problems that require composing 10 ones as a ten and 10 tens as a hundred. Second Grade students can complete any pages through Module 2 Lesson 11. The lessons in this module will include many strategies that will one day help students to be able to mentally add and subtract two-digit numbers. They tend to be challenging for students in the beginning and may be different from strategies you have learned. It is okay to tell your child that you don't understand the strategy, and teach them a strategy that you're comfortable with. Part of the point of this module is that students learn there is more than one way to solve a problem.
This Thursday, December 14th, we will be releasing our salmon into the Tualatin River. Please send your child in warm layers, hat, gloves, and waterproof shoes (or boots) and coat. It will be important for them to have a change of clothes in their backpack.
Mark your calendars for Pajama Day, on Friday, December 15th! Barn Swallows will perform a song at the ASM in the Grove Room at the District Office at 8:45.
Please help your child keep a full change of clothes in their backpacks! We've had a lot of wipeouts last week and we don't have much on hand in terms of extra dry pants, shirts, etc.
We still need support on the following trips this fall. Email Erin, [email protected], to sign up.
Thursday, December 14th, 10-1:30: Salmon Release @ Rood Bridge Park (seeking 5-7 volunteers)
