Last week was a short week, but we managed to pack a lot in. We read books about owls and bats and followed it up writing about them. We spent an afternoon in The Backyard Garden looking for spider habitat and shelters (webs and burrows). We harvested fresh greens and sampled them. And, we helped to prepare the garden beds for winter. In math first graders began a new module. Our first few lessons focused on subtraction and commonalities that can help us when solving subtraction problems. First Graders may now complete assignments through Module 2 Lesson 3. In math second graders made money tool kits and used money to practice place value. They modeled 3-digit numbers using one, ten and hundred dollar bills. They learned that 10 $1 bills can be exchanged for 1 $10 bill, 10 $10 can be exchanged for 1 $100, and that it takes 10 $100 bills to make $1000. They used play money, models and drawings to figured out how many $10 bills it would take to equal $1,000. Second graders can complete assignments through Module 1 Lesson 30.
Please remember to send your child to school with a raincoat each day! Reminder: We do not wear costumes to school for Halloween.
At last week's Out & About at Fernhill Wetlands, Level 1 students were treated to some gorgeous fall sun and the sound of migrating geese. Thank you to all parent volunteers that made that trip and others possible. Here's our next set of volunteer needs! Email Erin, [email protected], to sign up.
