Last week we read about a group of students in Everett, Washington that restored a creek in their neighborhood and raised salmon to release into the creek. We read books about salmon, forests, and water. On Thursday we walked to the bridge on the B Street Trail, so that we could collect a water sample from Gales Creek. We played a salmon game and looked for habitat features in the creek. Back in class we tested the Gales Creek water sample, along with three other water samples. We tested for ph, turbidity and temperature. We began writing personal narrative stories. Students shared small moment stories from their lives, we planned our stories across the pages and added details that helped our readers relate to our stories.
In math first graders solved to find the missing addend in addition facts, added or subtracted to make groups equal, compared numbers to find the difference and created graphs to represent collections of objects, then used the graphs to compare totals. First Graders may now complete assignments through Module 2 Lesson 23. Second graders learned multiple strategies for solving two-digit addition problems. Second Grade students can complete any pages through Module 2 Lesson 7. The lessons in this module will include many strategies that will one day help students to be able to mentally add and subtract two-digit numbers. They tend to be challenging for students in the beginning and may be different from strategies you have learned. It is okay to tell your child that you don't understand the strategy, and teach them a strategy that you're comfortable with. Part of the point of this module is that students learn there is more than one way to solve a problem.
