Last week we focused on squirrels, acorns and oak trees. We read stories, learned facts and prepared for our Out & About. On Thursday afternoon we walked to Roger's Park to get a close up view of oak trees, acorns and squirrels. While there we played games to familiarize ourselves with the lives of squirrels. Our social-emotional theme for the week was curiosity. We read several books with the theme of curiosity and the students had several opportunities to share and write about things that they were curious about. We began meeting in reading groups. These are groups of six or fewer students reading, discussing and writing about shared books. During reading group we work to develop a variety of reading skills that align with the students' needs. In math, first graders practiced adding by counting on and understanding the commutative property to add beginning with the larger addend. In second grade math, students practiced measuring in centimeters, and used models and addition and subtraction to compare differences in length.
